The Dandenong Ranges will be attracting more visitors, and boosting local jobs and the economy, with the
Victorian Government investing $50,000 to help deliver Ganesh Chathurthi in The Basin
Member for Monbulk, Daniela De Martino today welcomed confirmation that the event will proceed in August,
thanks to the Andrews Labor Government Small and Medium Events Program, which is aimed at attracting small and medium sized events across Greater Melbourne.
The Temple will be conducting a Bavanothsavam for the second time in its history commencing on 11 August
2023 and ending on 20 August 2023 which is Lord Ganesha's birthday (Avani Chathurthi). Baavanam is the
second largest annual festival to take place in Hindu Temples. It is often considered an extension of Mahotsavam (Flag hoisting). The significant part of Bavanothsavam is to imitate the playful stories of God as
stated within the scriptures. The Temple will be depicting the stories of Lord Ganesha’s over the festival through decorations, traditional rituals and songs. Over 10,000 attendees over the event will also be able to enjoy free south-Indian meals across the festival.
122 event organisers will share in an investment of almost $3 million to support the delivery of events between 1 June and 31 December – with the funding making it easier for organisers to bring their events to life with help to cover event costs, including venue hire, performer fees, staffing and marketing.
The Small and Medium Events Program supports a diverse range of activities including cultural, sporting and
creative events.
It will help create ongoing jobs across the industry, connecting organisers with local businesses and suppliers
and attracting more visitors to experience the best Melbourne’s suburbs have to offer.
